Beer Descriptions

At the time of the publication of this article the following eight beer descriptions had been released:

Ascendant Beer Company
Heart Going Boom, Boom, Boom
This White Stout is brewed with Maris Otter, 2-Row and a splash of Dextrapils malt. Hopped with UK Phoenix which smell and taste like chocolate. Coarse ground coffee from Portland Roasting Coffee is a blend of Guatemalan and Colombian beans, featuring notes of chocolate and brown sugar and a hint of tangy fruit. the rest of the aromas come from the cold lagered cacao nibs. It’s decadent, something to obsess over, something to make your heart go boom, boom, boom.

Bandon Brewing Company
Camp7 Coffee Porter
Our Camp7 Coffee Porter is a fusion of dark roasted malts blended together with light roasted coffee beans from Floras Creek Coffee Co. The bittersweet, fruity, dark chocolate and caramel-like flavors will wake up your taste buds with a whole-lot-a coffee goodness.

Deschutes Brewery
Pirates of the Escobar Bean
Cream ale conditioned on San Miguel Escobar Guatemalan light roast from our friends at Nossa Familia Coffee. Aromas of coffee, citrus and dried fruit are accentuated by subtle flavors of vanilla, rum, oak and honey.

 Fire on the Mountain Brewing
Mole Stout
FOTM Brewing is proud to present a robust stout fermented and conditioned on a special blend of mole spices. Three different types of roasted chiles, raisins, tamarind pods, cinnamon sticks, peanuts, coffee from Spella Caffe and cacao nibs were fermented and conditioned with a robust stout.

 McMenamins Breweries
Balanced Breakfast Brown
A cold brew that is also a cold brew. A “Cold’ cold brew’ brew”, why not? Our friends at McMenamins Coffee Roaster supplied us with some of the great beans used to make everyone’s favorite flavored cold brew coffee. We soaked the grounds in a batch of mild Brown Ale overnight. The result is a smooth, refreshing coffee Brown Ale with very little bitterness.

 Modern Times Beer
Ponderous Climate
We layered heaps of specialty malts into this beer including abbey, victory, brown, extra dark crystal, pale chocolate, chocolate wheat, and beech smoked malts giving the beer a rich, nutty, and chocolate base. Then we hit it with our own Modern Times Coffee Heavy Weather winter blend from our awesome roasting team. This added a nice dark fruit character to this Coffee Porter along with a hint of rummy goodness. Hazelnut, soft berry, and dark chocolate lead the way in this one.

Pono Brewing
Pineapple Espresso
We have partnered with Badbeard’s Coffee/Microroastery to bring you Pineapple Espresso. Pineapple Espresso is a blend of our Pineapple Express Kolsch-style beer with two different coffees from Kenya roasted by Badbeard’s. “We tried several coffee’s from around the world until we found one that had notes of berry and other fruits that paired well with the beer.”

Von Ebert Brewing
Hegel Sipped Coffee in Bamberg
Roggenbier with beech and cherry wood smoked malts, aged on Groundwork Coffee Co. single origin Rwanda.

From the Event Page:

“The Northwest’s two favorite brews are in the spotlight again for the 6th NW Coffee Beer Invitational. Twenty talented brewers and beverage makers were asked to create freshly-made beer with locally-roasted coffee.

With the emphasis on flavors, and an ABV of 7% or less, this event promises inspired combinations. Entries will be judged and the winners will be announced during the festival.

The cozy Goose Hollow Inn on SW Jefferson is the venue again, so join us for not only great beers but a unique, convivial atmosphere. The menu will include some special savories to compliment the brews and we will have live music in the outdoor heated tent.

Tickets available at the door only. $20 admission includes a festival glass and 10 taster tickets

Convenient located on the Max line, opposite the Goose Hollow stop.”

Barrel Aged Beer Festival
Rock Bottom Brewery 2019 Preview

I love beer festivals and I delighted to attend a media preview for the Barrel Aged Beer Festival happening this Saturday Jan 26 at Rock Bottom Brewery and I have to say – I was impressed!

We tasted through a number of the beers that will be poured at this event and Wow! I really enjoyed them.

Barrel Aged Beer Festival Rock Bottom Brewery 2019 Preview by Steven Shomler

Gypsy Lovers Imperial Stout

Of the beers we sampled during this media preview, my favorite was the Gypsy Lovers – an Imperial Stout aged in a Rose City Distilling Rye Whiskey Barrel. This was a stunningly delicious barrel aged beer!

I also particularly enjoyed these 4 other beers that will each be poured at this Portland beer festival –

Reckless Rabbit – a barley wine that was barrel aged for 12 months in a Port Wine Barrel.

Pagan Love – a Doppelbock that was barrel aged in a Rose City Distilling Whiskey Barrel for 12 months.

5th Dimension – a Belgian Quad that was aged in a Pinot Noir Barrel. Todd won a gold medal for this beer at the 2018 Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beer (FoBAB).

Portchata – A Porter that was aged in a Jim Beam Barrel. I was not sure if I would like tasting horchata flavors in a beer, however it worked and I liked it very much!

Food!

Sometimes there are food offerings at a beer festival that you can purchase separately, at this event the ticket price INCLUDES a buffet of wonderful food!

The buffet table will feature a charcuterie plate, meatballs, chicken skewers, mini sliders, veggie quesadillas, and a chocolate fountain!

Here is my suggestion – get a pour of the Gypsy Lovers Imperial Stout and have it with some chocolate from the chocolate fountain!

When you factor in getting 10 each 4 oz. pours of barrel aged beer, and the food that come with your $35 ticket – this festival is a screaming deal!

During this festival Todd will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have about the beer, and he will also be giving tours of his brewery.
